The folks at AgileBits are popping the cork on any number of champagne bottles this morning as the biggest version of its 1Password for Mac application finally shifts out of beta and onto the hard drives of users everywhere.
AgileBits announced Thursday the release of 1Password 4 for Mac, a significant update to the popular password and login management software. The release follows 96 beta and 62 alpha releases put through their paces by more than 20,000 testers over the last year.
The first thing users will notice is an all-new interface that borrows from the iOS version, but there are more than 90 new features also in tow, ranging from the ability to create multiple vaults to sharing individual items. The new version also syncs with iCloud, although the previous Dropbox method remains available for users who wish to utilize it.
Also new to the Mac version is 1Password mini, a full-featured menu bar utility which offers quick access to all of your secure content without the need to open the full application. Users can search, switch between vaults, copy data from any record with just a click and even generate entirely new passwords.
For users who are cloud-averse, 1Password 4 for Mac also restores the Wi-Fi Sync option, which allows data to be synced with an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad through a local network for maximum security. But fear not: The application featured 256-bit authenticated encryption, so data is safe from prying eyes.
The best news of all is that 1Password 4 for Mac is a free update for Mac App Store customers as well as those who purchased the software direct from AgileBits this year. For everyone else, the launch sale price is $39.99, a 20 percent discount from the regular $49.99 price, and website customers who purchased prior to 2013 can upgrade for $24.99, a $10 savings.
